Go narrative…
People remember stories and tales that they can relate to, wherever
possible use stories from real life to illustrate your points
-
Remember the laws of memory…
People remember the things that are said first and last, as well as the
things that are said frequently
-
The 20:40:80 rule...
Audiences remember 20% of what you tell them, 40% of what you tell and
simultaneously show them and 80% of what you let them find out for
themselves
-
Vary verbal imagery…
People’s preferred style of learning differs; be aware of this and
tell stories so that they appeal to the audience whether they are
predominantly visual, auditory or kinaesthetic
-
Non-standard visual aids…
Unconventional visual aids will add impact to your presentation and
help bring it to life - the audience will remember things that are unusual
– but do rehearse well!
-
Give the audience a rest…
Ask them to close their eyes, solve a puzzle or mentally prepare a
single sentence answer to a question – all these activities will help
to restore energy levels
-
Your closing words…
A ‘Clear’ close announces your conclusion eg ‘my take home
message is’. More powerful is the ‘Silent’ close, here the final
paragraph is so perfect that nothing remains to be said
