Tell an ‘everyday’ story
that the audience can relate to
…remember even if a lot of the audience know your subject, they will
be impressed if you can make a complex subject easy to understand
- Ask the audience a question
…then pause to give them a chance to think about the question, but
be prepared - they may even answer you
- Make a contentious statement
…saying something that
the audience will disagree with or feel threatened by is comparatively
high risk, but can be very effective
- Get the audience to discover something themselves
…people remember things that they learn for themselves, even if it is something quite simple
- Use a prop or do something unusual
…this will work as long as it relates strongly to your subject
matter, tricks and gimmicks are rarely forgiven by an audience
